Well we've had a glorious few weeks of weather here and dare I say - its felt like a "proper" Summer! What better time to make sure that my sunglasses are out, and that they have a beautiful case! As you can see from this picture, the one I had was perfectly fine - I actually like that it is a hard shell case... It was just soooooo boring! And it gave me the perfect excuse to try something new - making new fabric from scraps!
I'd seen this post
a while ago by My Poppet and fell in love with the scrappy felt fabric. I had loads of scraps from various projects and decided to try something similar but ended up going in a slightly a different way. I think its called Crazy Patchwork?
I put together a few of the scraps and needle felted them together at the ends to fuse the fibres (I knew I would have trouble with machine stitching if they weren't attached a little!). I measured the case and worked out I needed two pieces approx 18cm X 10cm each.
After felting the pieces, I used a zigzag stitch in black all over each of the join lines. It was a bit rough in places but I have decided that adds to the effect!
I used a general all purpose glue to attach the felt to the case (which itself was already covered in a polyester type material). I wanted something that wouldn't dry too quickly so that I could smooth it in to place and round the edges etc.
Finally I trimmed around the case cover, getting as close to the zip as possible whilst still allowing it to open and close properly.
Ta Dah! Much prettier!

Its really bright and colourful, and has the added bonus of being easy to spot if, like me, you're always leaving them somewhere 'safe'. I like the crazy patchwork style too, its really clever and effective.ReplyDelete

WOw this is interesting idea and looks like pretty easy too. At least when you got bored with the current look you can always change it. And then your glasses will have a happy house :)ReplyDelete
