... and The Innocent Big Knit

Today we thought we'd share a bit about The Innocent Big Knit, which are planning to get involved with. The idea is to knit mini hats to fit onto Innocent drinks bottles to raise money for Age UK.

Here's a bit more background about the big knit from the website...

"As many as 24,000 people die needlessly because of the cold every winter. Many others spend the time lonely and isolated, unable to heat their homes and struggling to get out and about.

Back in 2003 we had an idea. We asked some older people, and some younger people, to knit little woolly hats. We put those hats on our smoothies, and for each one sold we made a donation of 25p to Age UK. The idea snowballed and so far the people of the UK have knitted an astonishing 4 million hats. Together we’ve raised over £1.5m, and raised awareness of the great work done by charities like Age UK.

The money goes towards the cost of things like blankets, hot water bottles, hot meals and social gatherings. Many older people also knit hats themselves, and Age UK organises knitting groups, which can be a real lifeline for some".

To get you started, there are some knitting patterns available on the website to download, which are categorised into beginner, intermediate and advanced. Think we'll definitely be going for the beginner option!!

All the hats need to be sent in the post by 12th December, so we'll be dusting off our knitting needles to get on with our contribution! We'd love to hear from you if you're taking part as well.

  1. I intended to get involved, but I'm not sure now that I'll have the time. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished hats.

  2. My mother in law made these a couple of years ago, I'll check if she is doing them again this year. They are great fun and a good cause.
