Tip, Tools & Techniques - Makeup Brush Cleaner

Hello! Here's our regular feature where we share tips, tools & techniques that have caught our eye, things we have Pinned, and things we have tried. These are probably not going to change your life(!) but might make it a bit easier...

I do clean my makeup brushes occasionally but nowhere near often enough, and even then it's a bit of a half hearted swish around in soapy water! So, in an attempt to make myself feel virtuous, I decided to give this homemade makeup brush cleaner from Passion for Savings a go. Turns out it's really quick and easy!!
You will need:
  • 1 tsp hand soap (I used washing up liquid)
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
Mix everything together in a jar or bowl (don't worry about being too precise about the measurements).
Dunk in your dirty makeup brushes.
Give them a swirl around to clean. Look how dirty the water is - yuk!!
Give them a good rinse in clean water. Pat dry with a towel and leave to dry. A top tip is to lay them over an edge so they keep a rounded shape!
That's all there is to it!!
This cleaning combination has made my brushes feel soft and clean. It's also super quick, so no excuses not to do it.... I'm definitely a convert! How do you clean your brushes?

I also need to make a pretty container for my brushes, rather than an old jam jar! Any ideas?!

  1. This looks like a brilliant wash which I will try, the only thing I would suggest is don't dunk the brushes all the way in the water as the water will get under the ferule and break down the glue and the brush fibres may start to fall out.

You could get some old bits of crochet and glue to the jar to maybe get a bit of boho look.

    1. Thanks Cordelia! Good tip about not dunking them into the water. Love the idea of adding bits to get a boho look :) x

  2. Mine definitely need a wash! Going to have to try this... although I'm a little scared to see the water!
