Tips, Tools & Techniques - Cleaning a Washing Machine

Hello! Here's our regular feature where we share tips, tools & techniques that have caught our eye, things we have Pinned, and things we have tried. These are probably not going to change your life(!) but might make it a bit easier...
With all this lovely summer weather, it's a great time to be washing and hanging everything outside to dry. The downside is that my washing machine now needs a good clean to get rid of all the soap scum and mould that builds up!

So I thought I'd share a quick and easy tip to make your washing machine sparkling clean, just using vinegar!!
Start by soaking the washing powder tray in a bowl with hot water and 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar for approx 30 minutes.
While you're waiting, give the drum, seal and glass a good clean with the hot water/vinegar mix.
Put the tray back in, add 1 cup of neat vinegar to the washing powder compartment and set the cycle to 90C (or the hottest wash possible)
Leave the machine to run as normal and that's all there is to it!
I was a bit worried that everything I washed afterwards would have a faint smell of vinegar...but they don't and are as fresh as a daisy!!
If you have any Tips, Tools & Techniques of your own please feel free to get in touch with us to see if we can add them. The more the merrier!

We are linking up to these parties!

  2. Oh, vinegar is amazing ingredient - I use it for all sorts of things - perfect for descaling kettle too. (you do need to boil the kettle with water several times to make sure you get a nice cup of tea)

  3. My washer is in need of a clean so I'll give the vinegar a go. Will any sort of vinegar do, like the good old brown malt, or does it have to be the white kind.

    1. I'd recommend giving it a go - let us know how you get on! Not sure if brown malt would work the same way... I've only ever used distilled/white vinegar for cleaning x
