... and a Recycled "Trimmings" Folder

Hello! Here's a quick project that I have adapted from Jennibellie at Jennibellie Studio. Hers is a recycled folder / book to store Washi Tape, mine is to store bits of ribbons and trimmings in. You can see the full Video tutorial here.
I was working on another (soon to be disclosed) project the other day, and needed to find a bit of lace trimming that I knew I had. Thinking I'd been really good at organising my stash I was horrified to be confronted with this!
Horrific yes, but I had wanted to make a recycled folder / book for some time so here was the perfect opportunity!! (You may notice how I had attempted to do the storage thing with pegs - I didn't get very far!!)

I used a Mini Breadstick Box for my folder as it was the size I wanted - any box will do - we go through TONS of these for Mally's snacks...
After taking the box apart, the folder can be strengthened by folding the tabs down and sticking them in.
I scored the spine to make it "collapsable" - so it can expand when more sleeves are added.
I covered the box with some scrapbook paper and put a smaller piece in for the inside. I punched holes in the spine, and reinforced it with some coloured Scotch Tape.
I used another box (Weetabix!) to cut out some sleeves and covered them with more scrapbook paper (not essential just to make more pretty!!). I punched corresponding holes in these also.
To add the ribbons / trimmings I cut slits in the top and bottom of the sleeves, to hold onto the pieces and then wound them round
Each sleeve can hold 3 - 5 trimming bits (depending on how much you have) and you can continue to add as many sleeves as your folder will hold
I used some raffia string to hold the sleeves in place, secured them with a bow, and this means you can loosen the ties, and add more sleeves when you need to!
I love Jennibellie - I am addicted to her video tutorials! What do you think?  How do you store all of your trimmings?

We are linking up to these parties!

  2. If you think that is untidy you should see my bag of ribbons :) Would never have guessed that this used to be a breadstick box and cereal carton, great recycling!

  3. Great recycling idea that. My own 50L plastic box is a jumble of ribbons, braids and cords, once seperated in plastic bags but many have tumbled open........Id need to make a library of folders like yours, but then it would look so much neater and theyd be easier to find! So maybe I will ~ lol

  5. A brilliant idea and beautifully done, too. I have a thing about being organised and love projects that promise to organise me... but organisation never quite works out in reality for me the way it does in my head!!

  8. it's so pretty I'd like to make it even if I didn't end up storing things in it! My ribbons and lace and things are all in a box pretty much like your first picture sadly!

  12. What a great idea, and it looks great too. All of my ribbons are in a drawstring bag, held together with elastic bands.

  15. Great idea! I have tons of lace, trimmings and haven't been able to figure out how to get them organized. I may try a three ring binder I have and see if I can adapt this idea..... Thanks
