... and a DIY Painted Chair

Having had a go at painting and distressing my Make Up Storage Box, I thought it was time to try out these techniques on a chair!
This chair was one of two I 'rescued' from a neighbour's skip (I did check with them if this was OK first!).... and as with many of my projects, they have sat in the garage gathering dust until I finally got round to doing something with them!
To start off with, I gave the chair a good clean with soapy water and then lightly sanded to remove the existing varnish. Then I gave it a paint with one coat of combined undercoat and primer, followed by one coat of normal white emulsion. I chose to do a layer of white emulsion as I wanted to make sure the white would show through once I started distressing.

Next was two coats of cyan emulsion (left over from painting my craft room!)
Next came the fun bit of distressing the chair!! I didn't really have a plan, but did it a bit at a time so that I didn't get carried away and end up taking off all the paint. I made deeper scratches on the parts which would naturally get more worn e.g. corners and bottom of the legs.

I finished off with a light coat of satin clear varnish to protect and seal the paint.
And that's it!
This chair is now living in my craft room as it's the perfect height for when I use my sewing machine, plus it matches the colour scheme!
I really enjoyed this makeover and still have one chair left.... but haven't decided whether to make a matching pair or go for something completely different.... what do you think?!

We are linking up to these parties!

  1. That looks smashing, love the blue youve used.
I posted a pic very recently showing 2 chairs in a local store priced up at £40 each that had been similarly rejuvenated, by distressing.
The only difference being they had recovered fabric seat pads but it was the woodwork colours that struck me as delightful.
They were in pastels and looked perfect together although different colours.
Nip over to http://liniecat.blogspot.com it might give you ideas about your other one?
Your chairs arent Ercol by any chance are they?

    1. Thank you! Ooh I love those chairs that you have on your blog -you're def right that the pastels go well together, so might have to try that on the other chair! I'm afraid that my chairs are cheap 'made in china' ones ;) x
