Tips, Tools & Techniques - Homemade Edible Glitter

Hello! Here's our regular feature where we share tips, tools & techniques that have caught our eye, things we have Pinned, and things we have tried. These are probably not going to change your life(!) but might make it a bit easier...
I've seen on Pinterest a few examples of how to make edible glitter and it looked like fun.... so I thought I'd try out this version by Todds Kitchen!!
It's so simple as all you'll need to make this is food colouring and caster sugar!
Add the food colouring a few drops at a time, then mix until you get a shade you like.
Spread the mixture out onto a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper.
Bake for approx. 10 minutes at 180C and then leave to cool
Transfer into airtight containers (I used mini jam jars) and you're done.... Told you it was simple!!
I tried out mine on some biscuits I'd made (thanks to And Sew We Craft for the recipe suggestion). For some I sprinkled the glitter on before baking and the others I iced then sprinkled on. I'm afraid my icing is very messy rustic and am sure the glitter would look a lot better with neater icing!!
You could use these on all sorts of cakes and biscuits and I reckon it would be fun to experiment with different colours and shades to get different effects. For some reason the green colouring I used came out as gold - anyone know what the science behind this is?!

  5. Sounds like a fun cooking project to do with my dd. She's a budding pastry chef and I think she'll enjoy making this. Visiting from the Wed. Linkup

  6. Out of the blue my son has been asking if you could eat glitter then answering an emphatic NO! Maybe I should make this for him. Then again that might confuse him and he might try to eat non-edible glitter. cute idea, though I may just have to save it for later or not call it glitter.
