Tips, Tools & Techniques - Cleaning an Iron!

Hello! Here's our monthly feature. We hope to share tips, tool & techniques that have caught our eye, things we have Pinned, and things we have tried. These are probably not going to change your life(!) but might make it a bit easier...

How to clean an iron:

Does your iron suffer from overenthusiastic crafting and end up a little worse for wear?! Fear not... here is a tip for getting it shiny and new again!!

Before!
There are several tip and hints that we've seen on Pinterest and here are a couple we've tried:
  • Salt - the idea is to iron over salt on an old cloth, which then removes any 'gunk'. This didn't really work and just clogged up the steam holes!
  • Nail Polish Remover - use cotton wool or q-tips dipped in nail polish remover and rub over the surface on the iron. This didn't seem to work either, although it could have been due to lack of patience!
  • Magic Eraser Sponge - suggested by Dream a Little Bigger- these are sponges which you can buy in the supermarket and are designed to remove stains, scuff marks etc. You snip off a corner and rub over the iron (while cool).... and it worked!!
So the top tip from us for cleaning an iron is a Magic Eraser Sponge!!
Shiny!! The only downside is that now there's no excuse not to get on with the ironing...

If you have any Tips, Tools & Techniques of your own please feel free to get in touch with us to see if we can add them. The more the merrier!

  2. Thanks for sharing. No Magic Eraser here but wondering if an 'iron sponge' would work without any adverse effect on the iron.

Got here from Sew Many Ways.

  4. This Sponge is amazing. I use it every time when my iron is dirty. It is the easiest way of cleaning it. I tried with salt and it was a disaster. I clogged up the steam holes. Thank God someone has invented this sponge. Greets!
